Here is a list of foods I have learned to avoid post cancer surgery/hypothyroidism:
1. Soy- This is a tricky one because people say that soy can be good for you. BUT with a thyroid problem it isn't going to be your best friend. Soy is loaded with plant-based phytoestrogen, and some researchers believe too much soy may increase a peron's risk of hypothyroidism. It is loaded with estrogen which can interfere with your Synthroid or any other thyroid replacement pill you might be taking.
2.Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cabbage, can interfere with the production of thyroid hormone.
3. Gluten- Gluten can irritate the small intestine and may hamper absorption of thyroid hormone replacement medication.
4. Fatty foods/Sugary foods- because the obvious. Hypothyroidism slows down your metabolism and you just don't want that junk in your body being stored as fat.
5. Caffeinated drinks (coffee, soda etc) and alcohol. THIS one is hard for me because I love my coffee and I love my wine. I do believe in moderation you can be okay though. Once and awhile won't kill you but you do need to be careful that this isn't in your every day diet.
*My post thyroidectomy side effects*
I've noticed a few changes in my body since my surgery. Please comment below if you are someone who has noticed the same things or have had different side effects- I would love to know!
1. BAD hormonal acne (being a makeup lover this is particularly hard on me because it makes it super hard to wear makeup and feel confident).
2. Rollar coaster emotions. One second I'm happy then I'm mad then I'm bawling my eyes out. It's been hard to stay emotionally stable.
3. Weight gain- This has got to be the most depressing for me because If I'm not constantly watching what I'm eating, drinking and the intake of those things I blow up like crazy.
4. My hair as gotten a lot thinner since the removal of my thyroid which sucks because I've always had super thin hair anyway. ( I do know some tricks to make your hair look thicker though so maybe a future blog post ;) )
5. Always being tired, sluggish and having brain fog. Which can be described as you trying to get a word/sentence out but your brain completely goes blank. Some people describe it is "my head is in the clouds"
6. Depression- Need I say more? Haha
Thank you all for reading my blog and I hope this helped some of you! Stay tuned for daily blog posts :)
